Opera and Operetta on CD and DVD
New Year Operetta Concerts from Dresden Semper Opera House (DVD / CD) - Ones not to miss!!
In our view the best operetta recording on CD and DVD to appear for many years is the Lehar Gala Concert recorded on New Year's Eve 2011 live at the Semper Opera House in Dresden and released in 2012. This is a superb concert featuring many of Lehar's best loved operetta melodies (excluding "The Merry Widow" which was performed and recorded in Dresden on New Year's Eve 2010).
The programme includes numbers from "Paganini"; "Giuditta"; "The Land of Smiles"; "The Tsarevitch"; "Gypsy Love"; "The Count of Luxemburg" as well as some delightful rarities.
The encores include items by Josef Strauss, Johann Strauss II and Oscar Straus.
The orchestral playing is first class, breathing vibrancy into Lehar's lush orchestrations. The solo singers are excellent. "You are my heart's delight" from "The Land of Smiles" and "Girls were made to love and Kiss" from "Paganini" (to give their English titles) as sung by Piotr Beczala are particular highlights in a programme that cannot fail to delight any operetta lover.
We have both the CD and DVD versions and delight in playing them again and again. This is one not to miss!

For New Year's Eve 2012 a Gala Operetta Concert of Music by Kalman was presented and recorded for release on DVD. Another superb programme of familiar and unfamiliar works was beautifully performed.
The DresdenStaatskapelle and Christian Thielemann were joined by the Tenor Piotr Beczala, who was again the star of the show. The soprano soloist was replaced at the last minute due to illness, with the result that the less well known items are sung from a score, but this does not detract from a superb concert.

The "Merry Widow Gala" from Dresden 2010, is also available. The Dresden Staatskapelle and Christian Thielemann are joined by Renée Fleming and guests in another wonderful concert that includes highlights from Lehar's most popular work.
These concerts are available from Amazon, but if you have difficulty in obtaining your copy please contact us and we will try to source it for you.
